A review by Maria.
I would like to thank author Avery Burch for letting me read and review her new novel, Shifter.
Lyla is one of the rich elite training in school to become a powerful enforcer. She’s going to be engaged to her uncle against her will. He’s a powerful and ambitious man holding her and her mother under his thumb. She wants nothing more than to escape his clutches and find happiness. Zac is a bit of a nomad, risking his life to come to New York and pursue his dreams. Security into the city is fierce and protected by enforcers. Shifters are outlawed, hunted, and killed. When Zac starts to turn into a shifter, and imprints on Lyla for his fated mate, he needs to hide who he is or risk being killed.
I liked Lyla’s character quite a bit. She has no rights and is chained to a man she doesn’t love. She has enough magic to be considered one of the best in enforcer school, but it won’t help her escape her uncle and his obsession with her. Her character evolves and she develops quite a backbone and stands up for herself.
Zac was the romantic forbidden love; sexy, charismatic, and a shifter. At times he was downright sappy in love with Lyla. But he was still very likable, sweet, and smart. They were a very good match and the romance between these two was well done.
A romance novel needs to have a romantic connection and probably will have intense love scenes. I had two qualms with the love scenes in this book. In one of the scenes Lyla loses her virginity, but while romantic and passionate, it didn’t feel believable. There was no real shyness, or awkwardness or real pain involved and almost all of those should have factored into loss of virginity. I think these things would have enhanced the scene more. The second qualm I had is that all around Lyla and Zac the city is being attacked and destroyed. Everyone they love is at risk or dying. Yet they stop to have sex two times while this is all going on! I realize it was all still new to them, and there’s the celebration of life factor. But usually the celebration of life sex happens after they have survived. Not while they are still in the middle of running for their lives! This part while also passionate, was hugely unrealistic for me.
This book went fast for how long it was. It had very few slow moving parts. Telling a story through two different perspectives can sometimes make it choppy but this one blended well. While reading Shifter though, I couldn’t help draw comparisons from this story to the love story featured in the movie Titanic. Both Titanic and Shifter featured forbidden romance across the classes, a gap between the classes, banned from elite privileges, a poor boy saving a rich girl and invited to a fancy dinner because of it. It even had a version of the big “making it count” speech. I thought these similarities were interesting and the paranormal added a new twist to it.
Despite Lyla and Zac being fairly young characters I wouldn’t classify this as a Young Adult novel. There’s a scene with a brutal beating, several torture scenes, graphic violence, sexual violence, death, sex, and a war.
My rating: 4/5 stars.

He’ll risk anything to be inside me. I’m his fated mate.
What the hell am I thinking? I can’t fall for a wolf. He’s a criminal and an outcast. I’m an elite. If we get caught, they’ll destroy us. I’ll be disgraced. He’ll be tortured and killed. But his wolf instinct has locked on me. He says I’m his fated mate. And every time we’re alone together, he melts my heart … and makes me so wet I’ll risk anything to feel him throb inside me.
Everything they told me about fated mates is true. And that means I’m in a lot of trouble. I’m risking everything. As a shifter, I’m used to living on the edge. The regime wants me dead. But now it’s so much more complicated. I’m obsessed with this girl. I can’t get her out of my mind. I need to devour her, body and soul. I know I should resist, for her sake as much as my own, but I physically can’t. My wolf lust has locked onto her. There’s no way we get out of this alive, but one night inside her will be worth any punishment.
